To play a game of Keno:

  • Select your chip size
  • Select your numbers from the Keno board by left-clicking the number to highlight it. To de-select a number, left-click it again
  • You can select between 1 and 15 numbers. The payout for hitting a certain number of selected spots during the game is shown on the board to the left of the Keno table
  • Select Play to start the game
  • As numbers are drawn they are highlighted on the Keno board. A selected number changes colour when it is matched with a drawn number. When all twenty numbers are drawn, you will be paid out according to the number of matches made.
  • You can then start a new game. Select Play to use the same numbers again, or Clear to select new numbers for the next game.

To begin the game place a bet using the BET or BET MAX buttons. If the BET button is selected, 1 coin will be bet per game while the BET MAX button allows for 5 coins to be bet per game. Intermediate amounts can be selected by pressing the BET button multiple times. Once the bet amount has been selected, you then choose the Keno machine will randomly select the 1 to 10 numbers you believe. This is done by simply clicking on the desired number in the Keno number grid. A number may be unselected by clicking on the same number again. Once you have chosen between 1 and 10 numbers, you now select how many games you would like to play consecutively with those selected numbers using the PLAY ONE, PLAY FIVE, or PLAY TEN buttons. The PLAY ONE option plays the game once, PLAY FIVE plays the game five times, and PLAY TEN plays the game ten times consecutively.Selecting either the PLAY ONE, PLAY FIVE, or PLAY TEN buttons starts the game. The numbers randomly chosen by the Keno machine are shown by a Keno ball landing in the space of a particular number. Any matches with the player’s selections are shown with in flashing bright yellow. The payoffs are dependent on the total numbers selected by the player and the total number of matches. The chart provided below shows the odds based on the number of player choices and the number of matches.

One thing remains the same - In an online casino, a player will be confronted with a board of 80 boxed numbers.  On the screen will be a betting stake selector which only needs to be clicked in order to increase or decrease the wager stake.  Once the stake has been chosen, the player will begin to select numbers on the board by simply clicking the mouse directly over the number.  When the minimum amount of numbers has been selected (usually two) the payout odds will be displayed in an adjacent screen.  And just as the stake amount affects the payout scale, as the amount of number selections change, so too will the payout scale.  For instance, if a player chooses to pick five numbers, on the payout scale they will see the payouts begin to register for each selection as they are being made.  The first selection (meaning one match) may say it will pay half of the original wager, while the fifth selection (meaning five matches) will say that it will pay 25 times the wager.  What it is essentially saying is that if one of the five numbers is drawn, the player will lose half of their wager, whereas since the odds are more unlikely for all five numbers to come up, that will pay 25 times the wager.  The more selections a player makes, the more stretched will be the payout scale.  In other words, the payout for a selection of five will pay more on three winning numbers than on a selection of ten with three winning numbers  (Please see the below tables for more clarification). Now, once all selections have been made, the player will click on a “Play” button to commence the drawing of the balls.  After twenty balls have been drawn, winnings or losses will be displayed, and the player will have the option of either playing again with the same selections, or, clearing the board and making new selections.

Keno History

Keno originated in China more than 2,100 years ago. It was created to raise finances, much like today’s lotteries in the United States. Cheung Leung used the revenue from the new amusement to finance a weak army, so successfully that remaining funds were contributed to the construction of the Great Wall of China. The original Keno ticket used 120 characters. Players made ten selections, marked with an ink brush, leading to today’s term, “Keno Spots.” The quickest and most dependable manner of delivering results throughout China’s villages was via carrier pigeon.Keno was brought to the United States in the 19th century by Chinese immigrants who worked in the mines and on the railroads. The Chinese symbols were eventually replaced with numbers and, more to the player’s benefit, the 120 characters reduced to only eighty.

The origins of keno are a bit of a mystery, but there are a few stories floating around out there. What’s the truth? Sadly, as with all history, the truth is a matter of opinion. Apparently ancient Chinese scrolls indicate that Cheung Leung of the Han Dynasty introduced a game similar to keno around 200 BC. Cheung’s city was at war for several years and was beginning to run out of supplies. Rumor has it that the citizens of his city refused to contribute any more to the war fund, so Cheung created a game of chance to produce revenue for his army. This game, a numbers game not unlike keno, was an instant success and played a great part in saving the city. Quickly spreading throughout China, keno was also used to help fund the building of the Great Wall. The game also became known as the White Pigeon Game because carrier pigeons were used to send the winning numbers from the keno games in the larger cities to small villages and hamlets.

The heritage produced by this keno history is a Chinese poem of a thousand numbers. The ‘thousand character classic’ as it is known is a set of independent characters placed in a rhymed form. Originally a new way for children to learn, the poem is so well known the characters are often used as a romantic numbering system. So instead of having a board of just numbers on the original keno boards, they used these characters. Originally as many as 120 characters were used in the game, only after it left china would the number drop to a more familiar 80. From there, the story gets a little dull. Basically the most common theory is that Chinese immigrants imported the game as they helped construct the railroad in the old west. Regardless of its illegality, keno was played continuously by Chinese immigrants, so much so that in and around cities like San Francisco it became known as the Chinese lottery. The game didn’t have much success making its way into mainstream North American culture while it continued to use the Chinese characters as numbers. Keno history didn’t evolve further until near the end of the 19th century when the characters were replaced with more familiar numbers. In classic American style, when gambling was legalized in the state of Nevada in 1931 the fact that lotteries were not covered under the legislature discouraged no one. All they had to do was change the name of the ‘Chinese lottery’ to something else, so that it wasn’t a lottery anymore. Thus, it was changed to ‘horse race keno’, playing off of the idea that the numbers are horses and you want your horses to come in. As the government passed a law that taxed off-track betting, Nevada swiftly changed the name again, shortening it to just keno. Now THAT’S some good keno history!
